Ham radio users are individuals that use designated frequencies for private non commercial exchanges and emergency communications, ham radio users should not be confused for example with emergency services or even the radios used by cab drivers.

Many people that have heard the term ham radio but never realise that it’s not just a simple case of buying  the kit and of you go there are many considerations that need to be taken into consideration, for example amateur radio users need to be tested, in for example electronics and then government regulations.

Ham radio users are regulated by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) users issued licences by international governments who also issue individual stations with a call sign.

There is a huge RF spectrum that allows amateur radio users to communicate not only from one end of the city to another but they can communicate from one end of the country to another, it may surprise you but it does not stop there, it is possible for amateur radio users to communicate across an entire content, indeed anywhere in the entire world!

How did it all start you ay wonder, well there is evidence that the beginnings of amateur radio go back to the nineteen hundreds, although what you see today began during the early twentieth century.  As you will imagine the birth of amateur radio has contributed to industry and saved many life’s during emergency situations.

How to get started can be as easy as finding an amateur radio club who will provide answers to your questions such as licensing, techniques and advice on technical questions you will have.  If that is not for you or you can’t find an amateur radio club locally then there are plenty of books available on the subject.  One other resource are Elmers, these are usually seasoned enthusiasts who are willing to help new comers.
